Named for the polar night, open when it falls. Cocktails by the fire, vinyl on the house system, billiards in the games room — and the last löyly of the evening. For grown-ups only.
Kaamos is the Finnish word for the weeks in the far north when the sun never quite rises — the season Finns answer with candlelight, firewood and unhurried evenings. From 20:00 each night our top floor does the same: the lights go low, the fire is lit, and the whole floor becomes K-18 — reserved for guests aged 18 and over.
Built on birch sap, spruce tip and sea buckthorn — with a non-alcoholic list mixed with the same care.
A listening bar with a warm analogue system — Finnish jazz and Nordic soul, live at weekends.
Billiards, darts, shuffleboard and a long shelf of board games — played for the joy of it.
From 21:00 both saunas turn adults-only, and the avanto is lit by lantern.
The heart of Kaamos is a bar built like a living room: deep chairs, a fire, and a record player treated with the seriousness other bars reserve for their wine list. The music is on vinyl — Finnish jazz, Nordic soul, the occasional detour — and on Friday and Saturday nights a live duo plays standards by candlelight.
The drinks lean Finnish: small-house distillates, cocktails on birch sap and pine, natural wines, and hot glögi when the ice is in the harbour. The non-alcoholic list is a proper list — house infusions and alcohol-free aperitifs in the same glassware as everything else.
Reserve an EveningOff the lounge there is a room the phone never quite reaches: a full-size billiard table under a low brass lamp, a dartboard with the scores still chalked by hand, Finnish sjoelbak shuffleboard, and a shelf of chess sets and board games worn smooth by winters of use.
On Wednesday evenings the house runs a doubles billiards night — open to every guest on the floor, played for nothing more than bragging rights and a name chalked on the board. Everything in the games room is played for the pleasure of it; no money ever crosses the table.
The floor opens at 20:00 every evening and pours until 01:00. Some nights bring more than others.
