Archipelago & Experiences

Everything we offer begins at the water's edge, a few steps from your room.

The Sea Is the Reason

A City Built on the Edge of the Islands

Helsinki sits at the head of an archipelago of hundreds of low granite islands — pines, birches, red boathouses and channels that thread out into the Baltic. The sea is the reason to come here, and it is never the same twice: open water and long light in summer, a white plain you can walk on in February. We have built our experiences around that change rather than against it.

May – September

S/Y Vela, Our Own Boat

S/Y Vela is a classic wooden-decked sloop that lies at the hotel jetty, and from May to September she casts off every evening with a small group of guests aboard. Our skipper takes her out through the near islands, cuts the engine where the water goes quiet, and lets the wind do the rest.

You are welcome to take the helm or to sit with a blanket and a glass and do nothing at all. Bring a swimsuit — in July we stop at the rocks and swim.

When to Come

A Year on This Water

There is no wrong season on the Baltic, only different ones. Here is what each stretch of the year actually brings to Katajanokka.

Season What it brings
December – March Sea ice out to the horizon, ice swimming in the avanto, and hot glögi by the fire when you come back up the steps.
April – May Spring light returning fast, the ice breaking up, and the archipelago opening as the first boats go back in the water.
June – August White nights when the sun barely sets, sailing every evening on S/Y Vela, and island picnics on warm granite.
September – November Storm-watching from the terrace, the best of the sauna season, and dark skies over the sea — on a rare strong solar night, the northern lights may even show low in the north.
Before You Book

Weather Decides, Not Us

We would rather move an experience than run it badly — and we will always tell you the night before if the forecast has turned.

All experiences run weather-permitting. The Baltic can change quickly, and if conditions make the sea unsafe we cancel and refund you in full, or move you to another date during your stay — there is no fee and no argument. Sailings are confirmed by the skipper on the morning of departure.

To book, write to experiences@arcticvelahotel.com or speak to reception, open 24 hours. Please tell us about swimming ability, mobility needs and any dietary requirements when you reserve.
